About Carpet Cleaning Truck Mounts

There are two classifications of a truck mount: slide-in and direct drive or PTO (power take off).

Referred to as "slide-in" units because they can be put into many different vehicles and do not require power from the vehicle. This type of unit is powered by its own engine and is built within a frame or chassis that is bolted into the vehicle. The advantages are: It has flexibility in the type and age of the vehicle used, is easy to transfer from one vehicle to another, and has slightly lower gas consumption. The disadvantages are: It consumes more cargo space, is more complex to operate, and has higher maintenance requirements and the power plant can be less reliable.

A direct drive, a.k.a. Power Take Off (PTO) is a unit that can not be changed from vehicle to vehicle very easily. This unit is connected directly to the drive train of the vehicle and that is where it gets its power.

Carpet cleaning truck mounted units can provide the following services:

• Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning
• Hot Water Extraction Upholstery Cleaning
• Hard Surface Cleaning
• Power Washing

  Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning
The most widely used method of carpet cleaning is best using a truck mount. The process consists of putting down a pre-spray and then extracting the dirt and chemical with a carpet cleaning detergent. The is usually done with a wand or another rotary attachment.

The truck mount is your best choice because it provides heat and plenty of suction. There are four principles when it comes to carpet cleaning: Time, Temperature, Agitation, Chemical.

Time refers to the amount of time you let the pre-spray dwell on the carpet. Usually 10-15 minutes will do the job.

Temperature refers to the temperature of the water that comes out of the truck mount. A truck mount will provide the highest temperature which will give you optimal results.

Agitation is archived either by using a wand or a rotary machine.

Chemical is the carpet pre-spray and the detergent. Some people will also add boosters to their detergent.

There is not a minimum temperature for hot water extractors. You can clean with cold or lukewarm water but it will take much longer. Heating water causes the cleaning solution to become more active which allows the chemical to be more efficient. This is similar to watching a pan of water start to boil. As the bubbles move faster the molecules create a turbulence that enhance cleaning. Consider if you had greasy hands and you tried cleaning them with soap and cold water versus cleaning them with soap and hot water. You could get them clean with cold water but it would take a lot more effort.

There really is no maximum temperature. Even in a truck mount that has 240° temp. it cannot come out any higher than 211°. As it passes through the hoses, it will lose temperature, and as it is sprayed out, it loses more temperature as it hits the ambient air temp of 70° - 72°. By the time it hits the carpet fiber it probably has cooled to 160°.

The carpet products that have a stick on backing such as Collins & Aikman Powerbond RS carpets will not allow the heat to penetrate the backing.

To sum it up unless you have greasy, heavily soiled carpet, you do not need temps of 200° or more. If you do require those types of temperatures, you will not hurt the carpet due to the massive drop in temperature. The one exception would be a wool carpet which requires temperatures of less than 160° and completely different chemistry.

With the use of an upholstery tool attachment, you can also clean couches, chairs and even automobile upholstery with your truck mount.

Hard Surface Cleaning With a Truck Mount
With your truck mount, you can attach a hard surface tool to clean floors ranging from ceramic to quarry tile. These attachments are best used with a truck mount due to the fact that temperature and agitation (water pressure) are unmatched when using a truck mount. You can use these tools with a portable unit, but you will not achieve the results that a truck mount would provide for you.

Power Washing
You can also purchase a power washing gun to use with your truck mount. This would come in handy for washing decks, concrete and aluminum siding. Most distributors that sell truck mounts also carry a power washing gun.
